Over the past couple of days the Today show has raised the alarm about a dangerous chemical in some plastic bottles called BPA. Apparently you can identify which bottles contain this compound by checking the recycle number on the bottom of the bottle, which you find inside the triangle on the bottom of most bottles. According to reports bottles with the number 1 should be used only once and then discarded. Bottles with the numbers 2, 4 and 5 can be used multiple times as long as they are in good shape. Bottles with the numbers 3, 6 or 7 on the bottom should be avoided as they could be letting some of this chemical make its way into the fluids you are drinking and ultimately into your body. As of this time acceptable levels have not been established, but it may be better to be safe than sorry and avoid bottles with BPA until we know more. This report gives you a little more info on the chemical and it's problems. In the interest of fairness, another report says it's all hysteria and there is nothing to worry about. Read them both and decide for yourself.
